Feature of NotePaper, Line, Color: Percy Grainger as a Visual Artist

|
Our 2026 Spring Open House will be Sunday, April 19, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Percy Grainger Home and Studio, 7 Cromwell Place, White Plains, New York, with tour of the historic house at 2:30 PM. This is our annual open house to the local community and will feature Paper, Line, Color: Percy Grainger as a Visual Artist, an exhibition of Grainger's own artworks.
Artistic, creative, and innovative, Percy Grainger was very much a multifaceted artist. In addition to his work as a musician and composer, Grainger drew and painted from an early age and was a talented visual artist. Paper, Line, Color: Percy Grainger as a Visual Artist seeks to showcase the range of Grainger’s work as an artist while sharing his interests, inspiration, and working process. On display, objects from the PGS collection will include childhood drawings, paintings, sheet music, and prototypes for many of his graphics, alongside samples of beadwork and embroidery that reveal Grainger’s creative range and his appreciation of folk art from cultures around the world. For those of you located near White Plains, we hope you'll join us for the open house! Although the event is free and open to the public, registration is encouraged.

For those who are not able to view the new Paper, Line, Color: Percy Grainger as a Visual Artist exhibition at the Percy Grainger Home & Studio in person, several examples of Grainger's artwork are available as Highlights from the Collection on our website. The images shared here are beautiful examples of his visual artistry showcased in the collection.
In the photo above, we see a watercolor on paper by Grainger meticulously illustrating red and pink embroidery flowers. Much like this work, his cover design for the Lullaby from "Tribute to Foster" (pictured below) resembles embroidery stitched on fabric and is based on the decorative pattern from a pair of Native American moccasins. Grainger’s broad creative interests included making beadwork necklaces and designing and sewing his own clothing. Follow this link to view more examples of Grainger's sketches, painting, and graphic design.

Symposium Success!

The Approaches to Performing Grainger Symposium, held March 26–28, 2026, at Brigham Young University, was a joyful meeting of minds and music celebrating the creative spirit of Percy Grainger. More than 400 students, scholars, and musicians gathered for three unforgettable days of concerts, lectures, and shared discovery, honoring Grainger’s vision of inclusivity and artistic freedom. Hosted in collaboration with the Percy Grainger Society, the event blended scholarship and performance with genuine warmth. Society President Paul Jackson reflected, “We were delighted—after so many months of planning—to see how beautifully this worked out.” Read more about the Symposium here.

May 14: "Music: A Commonsense View of all Types”: Grainger’s
Lecture for NYU and ABC
|
|
|
Please join us on May 14 at 4:00 pm EST via Zoom for “Music: A Commonsense View of all Types”: Grainger’s Lecture for NYU and ABC. Presented by PGS President, Dr. Paul Jackson, this is the third and final session in the Percy Grainger Society’s 2025–26 members’ meeting series, Grainger the Educator.
This session explores Grainger’s lecture series, “A General Study of the Manifold Nature of Music,” delivered at New York University in 1932, and “Music: A Commonsense View of all Types”, delivered for the Australian Broadcasting Commission between 1934 and 1935. The notes for these lectures, published in full in for the first time in The Grainger Journal, 21/1 (July 2025), reveal much about Grainger’s conception of the development of the world’s music as cultural phenomena that share correspondences both of technical means, and of aesthetic and emotional values. Grainger’s analyses of a wide range of music in the lecture notes are, by turns, precise and scientific, and meandering and misguided, but are centered around the notion that “the highest flights of music are a spiritualizing influence inducing contemplation and rapture and leading mankind toward a more peaceful, harmonious and angelic life”, sentiments that remain pertinent today. Additional details for the event may be found through this link to the event listing on the PGS website.
