The Percy Grainger Home & Studio (PGH&S) welcomed its largest group of guests to the annual Spring Open House on April 19th. Guests included visitors who regularly attend events at the PGH&S as well as several neighbors discovering the house after many years of "passing by and never realizing that this was Percy Grainger's house!" Now in its sixth year, the event has evolved from including small performances to showcasing exhibits and features in other mediums such as visual art, dance, and multimedia -- all in the spirit of Percy. On display at this year's open house was the newest PGH&S exhibit, Paper, Line, Color: Percy Grainger as a Visual Artist. Included in the exhibit were examples of Grainger's visual art spanning his lifetime, from his earliest childhood sketches to his folk-art inspired paintings and embroidery, original graphic designs for sheet music covers, and detailed free music machine illustrations. At the Home & StudioHave you fixed your house lately?
Have you encountered areas in your home that needed repair? Houses of any age require a vast array of repair and upkeep, and the Percy Grainger Home & Studio is no exception. Built in 1893, this historic home presents the challenges of any house 133 years of age, with repairs needed consistently from all angles of the interior and exterior. Home repair often places financial strain on homeowners, and we can attest that this is also true for the PGH&S. Yet, this historic house offers a unique glimpse into the lives of Percy and Ella Grainger. With everything from Percy's manuscripts and Ella's paintings to their dishes and tools in the butler's pantry, the house is most-deserving of preservation. Gathering resources to address the needed repair can be summed up in one phrase: it takes a community to fix a house! Grant funding offers a start to our current exterior repair project, but the repair expenses surpass the amount grants can provide. Consider supporting the house restoration project with a gift today. With every dollar given, your generosity allows us to fulfill the Percy Grainger Society's mission. We are truly grateful!

PGH&S Welcomes Baldwin High School Students

Last month, Baldwin High School Wind Symphony (Baldwin, New York) students and their directors, Scott Dunn and Deanna Nikirk, toured the Percy Grainger Home & Studio as part of their visit to the Hudson Valley for an exchange with instrumental music students at New Rochelle High School. Reflecting on the tour, Mr. Dunn shared: The Baldwin Wind Symphony, as part of our journey learning Colonial Song, had the privilege of visiting the Percy Grainger Home & Studio. Grainger's Colonial Song is a Yuletide gift to his "mum", and what better way for us to make deeper connections and understand the life and music of this great master than to see how he lived and worked. Thank you to the incredible folks at the Percy Grainger Society for making this possible!
