Feature of Note Professor Phyllis Weliver Presents First Session in Grainger the Educator Series
|
|
|
The Percy Grainger Society's three-part series exploring Grainger’s often overlooked yet enduring influence as a teacher begins on Thursday, October 23, at 4:00 PM EST via Zoom. The presentation/discussion, by Professor Phyllis Weliver, is entitled "To familiarize American youth with the better type of new American music": Percy Grainger’s five summers at Interlochen’s National Music Camp.
In this session, Professor Weliver will explore Grainger's work at Interlochen in greater depth, noting:
We know that Percy Grainger guest conducted at Interlochen’s National Music Camp in 1930, and was on summer faculty in 1937 and 1942–1944. However, the extent of his contributions to Interlochen are surprising and forgotten. To be sure, Grainger taught, arranged and composed specifically for Interlochen students as part of his larger goal to help shape the curriculum at the institution that was driving the American high school orchestra and band movement, but he also made additional and varied large donations.
To tell a fuller narrative of Grainger’s time at Interlochen than has yet been published, this talk makes use of a large collection of correspondence and other items held by Interlochen alongside scrapbooks, diaries and letters at the Grainger Museum. Along the way, it also corrects perceptions of Grainger as a loner through showing his contributions to and sense of community at the camp, both with students and other faculty.

Curt Ebersole Presents Architecture & Inspiration: Percy Grainger's Home & Studio
|

|
We are thrilled to announce that Curt Ebersole will be presenting a clinic session highlighting the Percy Grainger Home & Studio at the 2025 Midwest Clinic! This year marks the 79th annual Midwest Clinic, which will be held December 17-19, 2025 at McCormick Place West in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
As a PGS member and close neighbor of the Percy Grainger Home & Studio (PGH&S), Curt Ebesorle has led multiple tours of the PGH&S for composers, conductors, performing artists, and music educators visiting the White Plains area. His Midwest Clinic session, Architecture & Inspiration: Percy Grainger's Home & Studio, will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Central Standard Time at W186.
Curt notes, "Since travel to White Plains is difficult or impossible for many, this clinic will provide a tour of the house, its many artifacts, and its insights into this legendary musician."
Curt's clinic marks the second consecutive Midwest Clinic session by a PGS member. Last year, Jennifer Martin highlighted Grainger's manuscripts as a resource for score study, rehearsal preparation, and improved performance. View the online version of the November 2024 PGS newsletter here for an overview of Jennifer's past session.

The Percy Grainger Society reminds you that the Carthage College virtual concert Elastic Scoring and Tuneful Percussion will be livestreamed on November 19, 2025, at 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM (CST).
This event, hosted by Professor James Ripley—Life Member of the Percy Grainger Society—offers a unique and illuminating journey into Grainger’s ground-breaking work for percussion ensemble, demonstrating innovation that predates many better-known milestones in the field. Sharing the podium with Dr. Ripley will be Michael Kozakis, percussion instructor at Carthage and DePaul University.
View more on the program through this link to the event listing on the PGS website.
This event is an invaluable opportunity to experience rarely performed works, rediscover Grainger as a visionary in percussion writing, and enjoy the distinctive voices of instruments that shaped early 20th-century musical experimentation.
