Ella’s unique painted tiles were exhibited at the Ferargil Gallery in New York City in November of 1930. Gliding Tones on Whistle, Notes on Recorders
One of the last remaining free music machines, Gliding Tones on Whistle, Notes on Recorders, has now been conserved and is on display at the Percy Grainger Home and Studio, the same spaces where Grainger and Burnett Cross created all of the free music machines. The display includes two information panels, on Percy Grainger and Free Music, and on the Gliding Tones on Whistle, Notes on Recorders machine. Percy Grainger's Free Music
Tone Rhythm Pitch: Exploring Percy Grainger’s Free Music was on view at the Percy Grainger Home and Studio in the Fall/Winter 2023-2024. The exhibition offered visitors the opportunity to experience the environment in which Percy Grainger developed his Free Music machines through a carefully curated collection of original photos, artifacts, and displays.

Creative and innovative, Percy Grainger was a true multifaceted artist: musician, composer, writer, clothing designer. Additionally, from an early age he made drawings and paintings, and he continued to create visual works throughout his life including the graphic design for many of his sheet music covers and intricate drawings for his Free Music machines. Paper, Line, Color: Percy Grainger as a Visual Artist explores the range of Grainger’s work as an artist while sharing his interests, inspiration, and working process.
